Things on the XIIIth: November 2018

Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite number.

Where is time going?? C’mon… it’s freaking November already… I blinked and another year of my life is almost gone. Wow. Anyway, new this month I’ve decided to contain all my personal babbling to a new section called “Life & Other Things”. Feel free to skip that if you don’t wanna read about me whining about life, eh.

Here’s the full gist of what I’ve been up to this fiscal month!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ⚡Review

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Review 1

Platform Played On: Switch
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Racing
Release Date: April 28, 2017

Let me get this out of the way first: Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64 will always be 100 times better than any Mario Kart game ever, in my eyes. That’s my opinion and I’m stating it. It’s totally cool if you disagree. The Mario Kart series has more of an emphasis on needing multiplayer to be truly fun, which is a huge reason why I like Diddy Kong Racing’s single player story mode style a lot better (even if the story is hilariously nonsensical… giant space pig… LOLz). Plus David Wise music… sorry, Mario. That being said, I’ve still enjoyed the few Mario Kart games I’ve raced around in, including this one!

Lightning Fast Mario Karting!

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This first impressions article was originally posted on my old website on June 10th, 2017. I recently finished everything I wanted to do in the game and plan to write a review here very soon, eh. Enjoy my past self’s unedited ramblings!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 1

All the cool kids who are lucky enough to own a Switch seem to playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe lately. I didn’t want to feel left behind, as usual, so I decided to pick up a copy a few weeks ago. I completely missed out on the Wii U version, making this title a brand spanking new experience for me. I must say that it has been ages since I played a racing game. I’ve spent hundreds of blissful childhood hours dominating the beautiful tracks of Diddy Kong Racing, but I’m a cranky old woman with slow reflexes now. What I’m getting at here is that I suck, but it’s so much fun! This is the perfect game to play alongside Horizon Zero Dawn. When I need a break from robot animal controlled Earth, I can relax by getting Blue-shelled into last place by another game’s evil AI.

The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask 3D ⚡Review

Majora's Mask Review 7

Platform Played On: 3DS
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Action-adventure
Release Date: February 13, 2015

Oh those glorious Nintendo 64 days are the highlight of my entire childhood! So much greatness and two freaking amazing Zelda games in one generation… what more could I ask for? I will come out and say Ocarina of Time is my favourite Zelda title (and all-time favourite video game ever) but Majora’s Mask has a very special place in my gamer heart too! And yeah, I know. I see the endless debates on the interwebz about which Zelda is the “best”. Your opinion totally matters, and by all means share it, but stop wasting time enforcing it on others. And that’s all I have to say about that, eh.

Anyway, I was super excited when the 3D remaster of Majora’s Mask was released on the 3DS a few years back! I was even more excited when I won the online checkout race and managed to snag the limited edition bundle that came with the Skull Kid figure. Take that, greedy resellers! My review of Majora’s Mask 3D was the second review I posted on my old website, back in late 2015. This is mostly the re-posting of that so please note that my review writing style has evolved a lot since then (I ramble on A LOT more these days). Now I’ll throw the words back to past me for a bit.

Blogger Blitz – Grand Finale

And here we are at the final part of my trip down Blogger Blitz 2017 by Adventure Rules memory lane! The whole event was quite the emotional writing journey for me but this last match literally forced Lightning and I to face the feelz head-on. Twas the most INTENSE scenario ever, too. I can’t even begin to try and re-explain it all so I shall quote the host’s description of the fun:

“You have been invited by the steward of the Mushroom Kingdom to assist them with a royal problem. The infant princess, Baby Peach, has begun to develop strange abilities based on her emotions. She literally cries rivers, when she’s angry she bursts into flame, her happiness causes her to float in the air and produce bursts of wind – the only emotional state in which the castle and its staff are safe from her is when she is calm. A doctor is preparing a cure but a courier has to make an overnight trip to pick it up. So the steward needs someone to protect Peach’s Castle from her emotion powers until the cure is delivered.
‘Why not just take her out of the castle?’ you might ask. As fate would have it, there’s an issue with the castle’s power source, the Power Stars. They’ve malfunctioned and now the only thing keeping them running is Peach’s presence in the castle. If she leaves, the Stars will fail and be scattered across the kingdom.
‘We tried having the castle wizard place a spell on her to make her sleep through the night,’ the steward explains, ‘but she is immune to any magic that influences her emotional state.’ There’s another problem too – taking advantage of the castle’s current vulnerability, the evil wizard Kamek has summoned six warriors from other worlds to attack the Mushroom Kingdom. You might recognize them as the defeated competitors from the Blogger Blitz challenge. These warriors, under Kamek’s control, will stop at nothing to kidnap Peach and leave the castle in ruins.”

Whoa!! Right??
