UNC: Platinum Mass Effect 1 (Week 1)

Me and my random game goals… alas! Poor backlog and never-ending stream of new game releases I’m totally ignoring. Anyway, I’ve decided to throw everything aside and go for the fancy PlayStation Platinum trophies for the Mass Effect trilogy of games. Why exactly? Hm. Let me figure out the root cause of this crazy mission…

Well, it all started with a blogging thing I’ve been wanting to do for a while. Athena over at AmbiGaming did a really cool Mass Effect Month back in November 2017 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of BioWare’s epic-space-drama-action RPG video game series. Basically, she answered 30 questions in 30 articles about Mass Effect that month. I wanted to turn that into one of those monthly blog challenge thingys and post my answers here each day in June (because it conveniently has 30 days).

Yeah. So after writing about 6 of those posts, I had an uncontrollable desire to play Mass Effect again. Nope. Those posts are no longer happening in June (maybe November). All I care about now is playing Mass Effect with every ounce of free time I have. Woo!!

Last year, I beat the Mass Effect trilogy for the very first time on the PC, but I had unplayed PS3 copies of the trilogy kicking around in my collection for a while. So why the hell not? I love Platinum Trophies and I love Mass Effect so let’s do this! Wouldn’t be the first trilogy of games I’ve Platinumed if I can pull it off *cough* Final Fantasy XIII *cough*

And no, I don’t want to totally abandon blogging while I chase after this goal (especially since WordPress renewed all my website fees). I’m going to try to post some weekly-ish updates as I go (highly depends on moodiness level fluctuations and whatnot).

Here’s how my first week-ish went!

WARNING: Lots of !!!SPOILERS!!! below. Stop reading and scrolling if you don’t want the Mass Effect trilogy ruined for you. You have been warned.

Creative Christmas 10: Whatever Should I Wear?

Ho, ho, ho, internet!

Last year, the amazing Kim of Later Levels created this awesome Christmas community collaboration event thingy. I was so totally in, then I deleted my old website earlier this year, erasing my old entries of the interwebz forever. Alas!

Basically, there were 12 holiday themed questions bloggers answered on set days, in a format of their own choosing. Yep. I’m still trying to get back in touch with my joyful side after 2018’s craziness… so I’m hyping myself up for that upcoming cheery Christmas event by re-posting my old answers and providing new answers for this year. I’ve changed a lot, man.

Question #10

You’ve been invited to a swanky New Year’s Eve party but have nothing suitable to wear! Which video game character do you call to ask if you can borrow an outfit?

Mass Effect Minutes (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2 of my Mass Effect babblethrough series! You can check out Part 1 here, if you want, but the TL;DR version is after exploring the Citadel for first time, I just legally gained control of the Normandy at the expense of poor Captain Anderson (galactic politics at its finest). The game gives you lots of freedom on what order to do things in, so my next mission is Priority: Liara T’Soni. Even before I knew anything about Liara, I had a strong feeling she was going to be my favourite Mass Effect companion… Ali Hillis voiced characters for the win!!

Obligatory: !!!MAJOR FREAKING SPOILER!!! warning. DO NOT keep reading if you have not played Mass Effect and plan to.

Mass Effect Minutes (Part 1)

Welcome to my first new babblethrough series on Livid Lightning! On my old blog, I really enjoyed writing posts like this babbling about my adventures through Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age II, Horizon Zero Dawn, and what little I had done in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (at the time of this post, I do intend to re-post/finish my older ones at some point, by the way). I guess these are kinda like a Let’s Play in written form using the tons of screenshots I take in games. I don’t have the verbal skillz to do the traditional video Let’s Plays, but I sure enjoy rambling about stuff in written form! These are also a great way for me to look back on a gaming adventure when I’ve long forgotten about it.

During my blogger breakdown, I focused heavily on playing through Shepard’s Mass Effect trilogy (for the very first time) to help me forget about this planet’s problems. I loved every precious second I spent with my Commander Ellen Shepard, so I’m very excited to start babbling about the entire trilogy journey I had, starting here with the first game. Not sure when/if I’ll get around to finishing it, but I’m cool if this remains an in-progress labour of gaming love. Oh and I was dumb and pressed the wrong screenshot button on my keyboard at first, thus missing many screenshots for the Prologue. Alas!

Obligatory: !!!MAJOR FREAKING SPOILER!!! warning. DO NOT keep reading if you have not played Mass Effect and plan to.

Oh the Andromeda Drama

Caution – This post contains spoilers for the beginnings of Mass Effect Andromeda. Some people like going into games knowing as little as possible (like me) so just thought I’d give you fair warning!

Mass Effect Andromeda 1

Yeah. I think we’ve all seen the negative reception this game got on launch day. All the goofy facial animations were the subject of many a meme on the interwebz, that’s for sure. During my blogging and social media, um, hiatus, I was able to clear Shepard’s Mass Effect trilogy, and damn, that was one of my greatest gaming experiences ever. I think Andromeda had A LOT to live up to by carrying the Mass Effect title, thus crushing a lot of fan hearts when it didn’t have the same, uh, standard of excellence. Now despite their flaws, I love Dragon Age II and the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy – games that are perceived to be awful by the “majority” of the internet. I’ve had many people tell me to stay away from Andromeda, and some others tell me they had fun with it. I decided to ignore all the internet drama and give the game a try for myself. As my gaming track record has proven, I usually love games people hate and vice versa.
