Path of the Grey Warden 9: Originated

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on December 25, 2017. Enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings!

This is it! My 9th and final progress babbling post for the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition. I can’t believe I actually stuck with something I said I was going to do… wow. Anyway, Grey Warden Ellen’s epic journey wrapped up with the Golems of Amgarrak DLC. However, I made a little side objective for myself before calling it a game – see the other 5 Grey Warden beginnings.

You know what? I think this is why the game has the word Origins in its title! There is a total of 6 different ways to start the game, depending on the race/background you choose. Each offers a completely different story, but they all tie together and branch out into the overall world beautifully.

Path of the Grey Warden 8: Gruesome Golems

Oh Maker, this DLC… what is it with dwarves and creepy-freaking storylines? Anyway, Golems of Amgarrak takes place in an abandoned Deep Roads thaig after the events of the main game/Awakening. As usual, you have the awesome option to import your Grey Warden. I really feel like Grey Warden Ellen and I have been through so much together! This will also be the final leg of her massive journey – always a bittersweet moment when a big quest finally ends… sniffs.

Greusome Golems 1
I won’t go into much detail outside of my spoiler area, but I will say this DLC very heavy on the Resident Evil-ish themes.

A dwarf named Jerrik Dace writes your mighty Warden-Commander a letter, pleading for your discreet help with an issue. His brother went missing while trying to find Amgarrak (hence the DLC name). Apparently, some intense research went down in there, and the dwarves are trying to uncover the secrets to restore their former glory… Yep, that never turns out good for ANYONE, EVER!

So, just how bad did it get? Well… let’s start from the beginning.

Path of the Grey Warden 7: Defeated by Darkspawn

I’m going to get this babblethrough done before the end of the year. I have faith in me! Right after I finished Awakening, I jumped into the Darkspawn Chronicles DLC. This one was very out there. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I like to think this in an alternate universe where your Grey Warden never existed. Specifically taking place during the final battle of the main campaign, you take control of a bloodthirsty Hurlock Vanguard fighting for the archdemon while leading a group of minions.

Defeated by Darkspawn 1
Throughout the DLC, you’ll hear the archdemon whispering instructions to you. Creepy-cool!

The evil mission only took an hour, but I enjoyed seeing things from the perspective of the darkspawn. Don’t get me wrong, I feel terrible about what I did to all the innocent people, but it feels good to be evil sometimes… maybe? Here’s some babblings about my reign of terror!

Path of the Grey Warden 6: Awakened

I don’t care if anyone actually reads these, I’m intent on finishing my babble-through series of the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition (plus reviewing it and Dragon Age II), dammit… better get babbling, eh! Next up is the full expansion, Awakening.

Awakened 1
The archdemon was just the beginning…

Awakening could really be considered a standalone game rather than an expansion. It has a whole new place, new story, and new companions, but the ability to import your Grey Warden from the main quest, or you can make an all new Orlesian Warden. It also takes place after the events of Origins so it’s best to play the main game first, I’d say. It took me around 14 hours to complete this expansion thingy, and I took a metric ton of screenshots, but I’ll try to do a quick-ish (well, it’s under 5k words) summary in one post. Here we go!

Path of the Grey Warden 5: Where’s the Wisecracking Witch?

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 15, 2017. Enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings!

Grey Warden Ellen’s back, baby! Pushing aside her intense grief over certain tragic events that went down in my main quest, she’s now on the trail of Morrigan in the Witch Hunt DLC. Unlike in Leliana’s Song, the Witch Hunt DLC gave me the option to import my character from the main game, which of course I freaking did! I also got my Mabari war hound, Max, back. Yay!

Wisecracking Witch 1
I wanted to give Grey Warden Ellen a big hug!! I missed ya, girl.

This DLC story takes place two years after the archdemon has been downed in the main quest, so talking about exactly why I’m hunting the witch is kinda spoilery for the main game… but Morrigan is gone for some reason, and where the hell did she go? Let’s find out more in the clearly marked spoiler area, shall we?

Path of the Grey Warden 4: The Brutally Betrayed Bard

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 15, 2017. Enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings! Oh and I have extra reasons to hate Marjolaine now…

After conquering Dragon Age Origin’s bittersweet main campaign, it’s time for me to dive into the DLC content. I scored the Ultimate Edition from Steam with everything, including Awakenings, for $7 CDN. What a steal, eh? I decided Leliana’s Song would be the first-next place to go.

Brutally Betrayed Bard 1
And wow, she’s more of a badass than I thought.

Leliana was Grey Warden Ellen’s BFF in the main campaign. You find her as a seemingly innocent Chantry Sister in Lothering near the start of the game, though it’s quite obvious she has a dark past (her adept murdering skillz kinda give her away). She seemed like an annoying religious fanatic to me at first, but her benevolent personality quickly shone through. She follows the Chantry and its deity, the Maker, but she’s more than willing to bend the more questionable teachings for the good of others.

Leliana told me a lot about her shaky history during many of our camp chats (along with very entertaining stories). However, it’s one thing to hear a story, but it’s quite another thing to actually live it. It really hammers home the point of why I love video games so much – you get to experience the lives of other people.

The Leliana’s Song DLC puts you in control of the badass bard herself and shows you just how brutal her past was. It only took me a little over an hour to beat it, but the whole experience was quite powerful. I should also state for the record that the Marketplace area background music has knocked Final Fantasy XIII’s battle music down a spot on my favourite game music list. That should say something! So, here we go! Time to babble about the bard’s adventure.

Path of the Grey Warden 3: It Should’ve Been Me…

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 9, 2017. Enjoy past me’s ramblings!

Don’t worry! I haven’t forgotten about my Dragon Age Origins progress ramblings series. I’ve just been busy, you know, actually playing the game and trying to write other things and whatnot. I left off last time at the part where I crowned the new Dwarf King of Orzammar (I truly don’t want to remember what I had to go through for that). So here we go from there, until the bitter end of the main campaign…

It Should've Been Me 1
Finally, a game that understands me!
