Path of the Grey Warden 5: Where’s the Wisecracking Witch?

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 15, 2017. Enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings!

Grey Warden Ellen’s back, baby! Pushing aside her intense grief over certain tragic events that went down in my main quest, she’s now on the trail of Morrigan in the Witch Hunt DLC. Unlike in Leliana’s Song, the Witch Hunt DLC gave me the option to import my character from the main game, which of course I freaking did! I also got my Mabari war hound, Max, back. Yay!

Wisecracking Witch 1
I wanted to give Grey Warden Ellen a big hug!! I missed ya, girl.

This DLC story takes place two years after the archdemon has been downed in the main quest, so talking about exactly why I’m hunting the witch is kinda spoilery for the main game… but Morrigan is gone for some reason, and where the hell did she go? Let’s find out more in the clearly marked spoiler area, shall we?

!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!! DO NOT read anything else unless you want this great game ruined… I’m serious.

Path of the Grey Warden 4: The Brutally Betrayed Bard

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 15, 2017. Enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings! Oh and I have extra reasons to hate Marjolaine now…

After conquering Dragon Age Origin’s bittersweet main campaign, it’s time for me to dive into the DLC content. I scored the Ultimate Edition from Steam with everything, including Awakenings, for $7 CDN. What a steal, eh? I decided Leliana’s Song would be the first-next place to go.

Brutally Betrayed Bard 1
And wow, she’s more of a badass than I thought.

Leliana was Grey Warden Ellen’s BFF in the main campaign. You find her as a seemingly innocent Chantry Sister in Lothering near the start of the game, though it’s quite obvious she has a dark past (her adept murdering skillz kinda give her away). She seemed like an annoying religious fanatic to me at first, but her benevolent personality quickly shone through. She follows the Chantry and its deity, the Maker, but she’s more than willing to bend the more questionable teachings for the good of others.

Leliana told me a lot about her shaky history during many of our camp chats (along with very entertaining stories). However, it’s one thing to hear a story, but it’s quite another thing to actually live it. It really hammers home the point of why I love video games so much – you get to experience the lives of other people.

The Leliana’s Song DLC puts you in control of the badass bard herself and shows you just how brutal her past was. It only took me a little over an hour to beat it, but the whole experience was quite powerful. I should also state for the record that the Marketplace area background music has knocked Final Fantasy XIII’s battle music down a spot on my favourite game music list. That should say something! So, here we go! Time to babble about the bard’s adventure.

Path of the Grey Warden 3: It Should’ve Been Me…

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on October 9, 2017. Enjoy past me’s ramblings!

Don’t worry! I haven’t forgotten about my Dragon Age Origins progress ramblings series. I’ve just been busy, you know, actually playing the game and trying to write other things and whatnot. I left off last time at the part where I crowned the new Dwarf King of Orzammar (I truly don’t want to remember what I had to go through for that). So here we go from there, until the bitter end of the main campaign…

It Should've Been Me 1
Finally, a game that understands me!

Path of the Grey Warden 2: Ah! Broodmother?! KILL IT!!!

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on September 10, 2017. Hurricane season is dangerous, I tell ya. Anyway, enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings!

Hope everyone’s having a glorious weekend, but my thoughts go out to everyone in Florida. Irma is a hurricane who means serious business and brings the potential for horrific devastation. Here in Nova Scotia, we had a direct hit from a pathetic category 2 one many years ago. It destroyed many things and crippled my province for weeks. My parents and I were without power for 8 days (that’s right – younger me had to endure 8 whole days without video games). I can fearfully imagine what a stronger one can do.

I was feeling a bit under the weather myself, so I’ve been Dragon Aging it up A LOT this weekend. I’ve actually beaten the main campaign now, but I still want to ramble about everything I’ve done to get there. I’ve been going nuts with the screenshots and progress notes too. I’ve also decided to break up my progress reports into a couple of posts that I’ll publish over time (maybe? I’m not good at doing things I plan to). This post will be my conclusion to the Orzammar saga. So without further inane pre-rambling, here we go!

Path of the Grey Warden 1: Order to Orzammar

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This is the re-posting of the Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series I did on my old website. This article was originally posted on September 2, 2017, and right in the middle of the original Adventure Rules Blogger Blitz community event. Fun times! Anyway, enjoy past me’s unedited ramblings.

Thank the Maker, I’m enjoying Day 2 of my awesome 4 Day vacation! It’s Labour Day here in Canada on Monday (same as our American neighbours, except we spell it differently because of our great British overlords) and I’m visiting family in the middle of nowhere until Sunday night. Unfortunately, that means I had to leave Dragon Age Origins behind for a bit… but I can still ramble about it online! Besides, I really need a break from trying to write about robots and soccer balls.

By the way, I love taking in game screenshots! I have almost 6 GB of images from various video games stored on my hard drive. Since I’m playing the PC version of Origins, I’ve been quite the shutterbug. Every time I see something cool, I just have to tap a key and then I have a digital image to treasure forever (or until some sort of catastrophic technology error happens). It’s always disappointing when I have to go back to consoles that don’t have that glorious feature.

Anywho, something I really enjoyed blogging about this year was my journey through Horizon Zero Dawn, in the form of a bunch of rambling progress posts, complete with some of the over 1,500 screenshots I took in that game. I’m loving every damn minute of Dragon Age Origins (it’s already surpassed HZD for my personal GoTY) so I think I’m going to do the same thing with this game. I wish I would have done this sooner, but oh well.

Progress thus far…

Where I’m At: Just entered the Dead Trenches (it lives up to its name)
What I Just Did: Fought a bunch of creepy-freaking giant spiders to get to a journal. *shudders*
What I’m Doing: Searching for a missing Paragon, in what appears to be darkspawn grand central, all to resolve a ‘minor’ dwarf political dispute.
Grey Warden Ellen’s Level: 17 (4957/10000 until next level up)
Playtime: 39 hours 15 minutes

Order to Orzammar 1
That’s right! Grey Warden Ellen can mess anyone up now.

Becoming the Grey Warden

Caution – This post contains spoilers for the a large part of Dragon Age Origins. Some people like going into games knowing as little as possible (like me) so just thought I’d give you fair warning!

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This first impressions article was originally posted on my old website on August 20, 2017. Enjoy my past self’s mostly unedited ramblings! Something interesting I’ve noticed (other than bad grammarz) is that I now understand my “gushing” over Alistair. Since the original post I’m proud to say I’ve discovered I’m a demiromantic asexual. That’s a whole other post (which is here), but suffice to say, I’m not interested in sexual relationships with any gender and there’s nothing wrong with that, eh! I know mostly everyone out there gets the whole sex without love thing. I just want to say that love without sex does exist too.

Dragon Age Origins Impressions 1

Okay, so 30+ hours into a game is a little late for a first impressions type of post thingy, but I don’t care – here it is! Sometimes I just have to play a game instead of wasting time rambling about it online. Anyway, I’ve fallen way behind on BioWare’s great games so I’ve randomly decided to focus on them for the foreseeable future (of my own freewill I assure you). In fact, I’ve only played one BioWare game before now: Dragon Age II. And yeah, it’s the same tired old story with that one – I love it, the internet hates it, and whatever… let’s move on. One of the things I respect most about BioWare is their character diversity and development style. It’s about time I started meeting more of their fantastic fictional people!

Lightning Fast Mario Karting!

Wannabe Writer’s Note: This first impressions article was originally posted on my old website on June 10th, 2017. I recently finished everything I wanted to do in the game and plan to write a review here very soon, eh. Enjoy my past self’s unedited ramblings!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 1

All the cool kids who are lucky enough to own a Switch seem to playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe lately. I didn’t want to feel left behind, as usual, so I decided to pick up a copy a few weeks ago. I completely missed out on the Wii U version, making this title a brand spanking new experience for me. I must say that it has been ages since I played a racing game. I’ve spent hundreds of blissful childhood hours dominating the beautiful tracks of Diddy Kong Racing, but I’m a cranky old woman with slow reflexes now. What I’m getting at here is that I suck, but it’s so much fun! This is the perfect game to play alongside Horizon Zero Dawn. When I need a break from robot animal controlled Earth, I can relax by getting Blue-shelled into last place by another game’s evil AI.
