Underrated Ladies!

My blogger tag To Do list is outta control, man. For the record, I love everyone who thinks to tag me in these chain letters… I mean, Blogger Tags/Awards. It’s just my response time ranges from almost forever to never. I need to be in the right mood to write about stuff, I guess? I’m also old now and I forget what I was tagged in if I don’t bookmark it right away… and what is proper sentence structure? I’m seriously a mess over here.

Anyway, I’m going to try to work on that! Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes, just be better. And what better place to start than this fabulous female empowered tag from the always cool Kelly over at Why We Play Games (thanks, girl).

Yes. Yes, I do see many opportunities to mention Final Fantasy XIII with this one. No. No, I’m not sorry.

Rules (I will try to follow, but no one’s the boss of me on my blog)

  • PingBack to Kate at Melting Pots and Other Calamities and pingback to a post of hersย (I guess she’s the creator of this tag thingy? Good for her!)
  • Answer the questions (That’s the point of these tags thingys, no? See below!)
  • Choose female characters from books, movies, TV, anime, webtoons, etc. (I’ll try my best)
  • Tag as many people (We’ll see…)
  • Have fun! (No doubt)

Name a heroine you like but whom you feel is always overshadowed by the male characters in the story.

Ciri from The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

Ciri Witcher 3

I love Geralt and his wonderful non-caring sarcasm. I mean, come on! Look at how many freaking fetch quests the poor dude gets sent on by the idiot NPCs he has to deal with… can you really blame him? The Witcher 3’s story is focused on Geralt’s quest to find his adoptive daughter, Ciri. I won’t spoil anything, but those certain parts were you take control of Ciri are awesome (especially late in the game). I would immediately throw all of my money at a Witcher game where Ciri is the main protagonist. She would stand quite well on her own, and outside of Geralt’s overprotective shadow.

For that matter, name a heroine whom you feel is always overshadowed by the other female characters in the story.

Vanille from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy

Vanille Final Fantasy XIII

Poor Vanille does not get the full attention that she deserves (remedied a bit in Lightning Returns, however). She is such a beacon of positivity no matter how awful she feels, and made me smile many times when I was a miserable wreck playing Final Fantasy XIII for the first time. Sadly, the badass females Lightning and Fang often aggressively block out Vanille’s story spotlight. Fun fact: Vanille was originally intended to be the protagonist of FFXIII.

Name a character who had potential but was greatly underutilized in her story.

ร‰lise de la Serre from Assassin’s Creed Unity

Elise De La Serre

ZOMG, I just remembered the floating eyeballs! Hahahaha… ha. Sorry. Every time I think Assassin’s Creed Unity, I think of that infamous cutscene glitch the game launched with. Ahem. Anywho, Elise is quite the badass Templar lady who is so criminally underutilized in the game I don’t know where to even begin (just like the French Revolution setting, but I digress). Her fiery spirit has SO MUCH potential and she is SO MUCH more interesting than the dull Arno the Assassin protagonist. Unfortunately, she is mostly used a plot device for the unnecessary-in-my-opinion Romeo/Juliet style romance arc in the story. And she deserved a helluva lot better ending than what she got… c’mon, Ubisoft.

Name a female character who you either find better in her book than her movie, find better in her movie than her book, or whose portrayals you find equal.

Uh… my book-reading and movie-watching levels are way too low to answer this one. Um… yeah. Nothing. Next!

Name a character who you want more backstory on.

Lightning Farron from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy

Lightning Farron Final Fantasy XIII

Yes. I am aware my shero Lightning Farron has full trilogy of awesome Final Fantasy games to tell her epic story. Her present and future are certainly well-covered, but I want to know more about her past. What was it like raising Serah? How did her time in the military go? I’d be super happy if this was a DLC option for a remake of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, or something. Wow… I just wished for DLC. Not sure how I feel about that.

Name a character with traits you feel are sadly overlooked by everyone.

Serah Farron in Final Fantasy XIII-2

Serah Final Fantasy XIII-2

Serah starts of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy as Lightning’s “weak” little sister. In the first game, she heavily depends on her big sis Lightning and her annoying wannabe hero man Snow to save her from the evil god thingys. Lightning and Snow have more than one fight fueled by who loves Serah more, that’s for sure. I often see Serah herself dismissed as the damsel in distress that no one really cares about. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, Serah grows from that sheltered woman into her own strong shero. And that transition was not easy for her at all, making it seem real, you know? With her big sis and man ripped away from her life, Serah had no choice but to prove to herself she is capable of kicking ass and saving the world… sorta.

Name a morally grey character. (Villain or anti hero!)

Fortune from Metal Gear Solid 2

Fortune Metal Gear Solid 2

Most of Metal Gear Solid 2’s plot details are so whooooosh over my head that I’m not gonna go there, but damn, the characters are really interesting to see in action. Fortune (aka Helena Dolph Jackson, Queen, or Lady Luck) is the nihilistic leader of the turned-terrorist Dead Cell unit. Fortune can’t die even though she really wants to. Grenades don’t explode near her, bullets zoom around her, etc. She’s been through some shit, to say the least, and I really connected with her dark emotions (self-loathing, grief, and anger). In my headcanon, I also like to think she has an asexual romance with Vamp (fanfiction incoming!! … kidding). Bonus points for having badass rail gun that essentially shoots lightning bolts at people. Run Raiden, run!! That was a fun boss fight. Good times!

A character youโ€™re stunned isnโ€™t more famous.

Gunrunner Empress Hailimi Bristol from the Behind the Throne novel series

After the Crown

I am seriously shocked this character isn’t more famous! Hail is a combat goddess, gifted negotiator, queen of sarcasm, and awesome human being worth getting to know. She easily takes the “My Favourite Book Shero” award. For those unfamiliar, I can best describe the world K.B. Wagers created with this book series as a cross between Mass Effect and Star Wars: lots of galactic politics and shooting stuff topped with a well-written cast of cool characters. Oh, and the Farian race are kinda like space elves so add a bit of Dragon Age to the mix.

A character from a piece of fiction youโ€™re amazed isnโ€™t more famous.

Odessa from the novel Icefall

I’m not sure what the status of the Clearsky Chronicles book series is these days, but the first book needs more attention. The writing style is super effective and it has some neat sci-fi themes, to say the least. Odessa, the book’s protagonist, is essentially force born asexual by a chemical chip that her dystopian overlords have implanted into their genetically engineered subjects. I’m dying to find out how that plays out… More of my thoughts on this book can be found in my official review.

Fantastic Female Bloggers

Livid Lightning’s tagging policy is usually “nah” or “make me” (depending on current mood), but I figured I’d link to some cool female blogger folks out there. This is not a tag if you don’t wanna do it or already have. I just want to promote you because you’re awesome, girl!

I'm a wannabe writer and an avid video gamer with a slight (okay, maybe extreme) Amiibo addiction. I'm from the coastal province of Nova Scotia in Canada, eh. When I'm not gaming, I have a steady job thing I have to go to. It pays for the gaming thing though. :)

  1. Haha I love the “no oneโ€™s the boss of me on my blog” and the “nah” and “make me” attitude for the rules you have! I’m the same way. ๐Ÿ˜›
Really cool post, and thank you SO MUCH for the shout out! โค It means a lot! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Vanille doesn’t get enough love, she’s great. Mind you, the people who dismiss her as being “annoying” or whatever are generally the people who complain about Final Fantasy XIII being “bad” anyway, so I tend to discard their opinions as a matter of course!

  3. Thank you for the tag ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m pretty sure I have this tag somewhere on my to-do list! This is a great celebration of (among other things) the sheer number and variety of female characters in FF XIII. When (if) I write mine I think I would also include Yeul somewhere in the list. She doesn’t speak much but I find her completely fascinating!

    1. Thank you for reading, former judgey Blogger Blitz punk and current cool competitor! ๐Ÿ˜› One of the many reasons why I love the FFXIII trilogy. Yeul definitely needs moar love too. Looking forwarding to reading your post when (if) you write it!

  4. Princess What’s-Her-Name from Earthworm Jim. She was very cool in the cartoon series. Celeste from Celeste is most excellent. Dixie Kong deserves a special mention as she was my monkey of choice from monkey-fest DKC2. Toadette is cool, too. And is Yoshi a bloke? Or a non-bloke? Either way, Yoshi should be a gay icon.

      1. Yeah, I’m following/stalking David Wise on Twitter hoping that he will one day acknowledge me. He did like one of my responses once, which I shall frame and hang on my wall.

  5. Thank you so much for the shout-out! I really appreciate it!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I will definitely do this tag and have added it to my “blog posts to do” list. Yes, I have a list, or else I will forget LOL!! Loved your answers by the way!

  6. Absolutely, you’re welcome for the blog tag! When you find the time to handle those 121 questions, I’m very excited to read them.

Vanille is the best. Seriously the best. She was my favorite part of XIII.

  7. Thanks for the shout out ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m the same with tags, I either take ages or so long I forget about them!

I found Tifa the most overshadowed by male characters (FF7). She seemed so awesome, but I don’t think she got enough development! (Maybe the remake will change that, and since remakes seem to be a trend maybe you’ll get an extended edition of all the FF13 games with extra backstory ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. I really need to catch up on my gaming. I know The Witcher is now (or going to be) a series on Netflix or one of those streaming services. I still have Dragon Age and Mass Effect on my list. I at least added the first book in the Indraran Empire series. With that combination of narratives, how could I not? Also definitely need to watch some Metal Gear LPs. I already know it shares some of the more messed up similarities with my favorite VII, and I also want to get the memes lol.
