Things on the XIIIth: March 2019

Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite number… because I like Final Fantasy XIII a lot? Jeez… tough crowd.

Winter…. I’m begging you… PLEASE GO AWAY! I’m so tired of snowbanks, freezing weather, my car getting stuck, and every part of my body hurts from shoveling and falling on icy sidewalks.

Winter Claws.png
Winter almost literally has its horrible claws dug in here…

To top it all off, my area of the world likes to do this Daylight Saving Time crap where we set the clocks ahead an hour last weekend. Not only does that mess with my internal clock, it also means I get to walk to work in the dark-cold again. Yay… Seriously. We aren’t all farmers who need max daylight hours these days… or whatever the hell the reason for originally starting this was. Some archaic traditions need to die, and changing the clocks is one of them.

Spring and actual longer days will come soon. But yeah, here’s what I’ve been up to this fiscal month… so tired.

Blogging Things

I’ve done a little pre-spring blog cleaning in the hopes that spring will hurry up, goddammit (I’ll stop with the seasonal distress now). Let’s see… I’ve redesigned my sidebar to include some links, as well as to promote my blogging buddies’ great work (I love you guys). Also, I’ve split my Post Archives into several pages. It was getting kinda messy on one page…

Yeah… and, um, I super quietly set up a Patreon campaign. Other than putting a button for it in my sidebar, I haven’t promoted it at all. I… don’t feel right begging for money with no real goal in mind, I guess. Not sure what I’ll do with it, but my page looks super awesome thanks to the great design work of RinDes! You should totally support her Patreon campaign instead.

In terms of the actual writing of posts, my mental health kinda tanked again triggering self-loathing writer mode last week. I’m still working on that… I also wanted to do a weekly post for AmbiGaming, but my words just aren’t working well enough for that at the moment. I’ll write when I feel like it and focus on having FUN with this hobby, like I keep telling myself.

Finally, if you’re up for partaking in the latest community event I helped create with the lovely Later Levels, check out the #MaybeInMarch Mission!

XIII Great Things I Read From Others

Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!

I) Who let owls out? Hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot… sorry. I mentioned I was tired at the start of this post so that makes me weirder than usual. Anyway, Professional Moron‘s short story about owls was a real hoot to read! Wow. What’s wrong with me??

II) It was so great to see Geeky Talk jump back into the blogger world with a cool review of Cosmic Star Heroine.

III) I love reading about cool creators creating creations! The War Doctor‘s post about making a Master Chief mannequin was magnificent.

IV) ZOMG… Louise Brady tipped me off on the best book I’ve ever read (more on that in my Reading Things section of this post).

V) My inner childhood Pokemon card collector loved reading about the Japanese version of Slowking on Daily Trading Cards. This one reminds me the Ancient Mew card I got for going to one of the movies with my parents. Ah, the good ol’ days.

VI) I never watch Nintendo Directs, which is why I really enjoy reading Adventure Rules‘ post about the recent Pokemon focused one, before he actually watched it! That takes extra awesome coverage skills, just saying. Those new games look pretty sweet…

VII) I always enjoy reading entertaining State of the Everything update posts from fellow Daylight Savings Time hater, and good blogging buddy, The Shameful Narcissist.

VIII) Love it when Aether drops badass business logic in posts like his analysis of the recent Activision Blizzard layoffs.

IX) The Triple Option‘s detailed review of Minit introduced me to a game I’ve never heard before but am quite interested in checking out now… eventually. Backlog problems, as usual.

X) Degrading equipment is a video game mechanic that needs to GTFO of my games, dammit!! Ahem. Normally, I can deal with it, but  I hate, hate, hate, hate, how it is in Breath of the Wild. Gr! But yeah, Hundstrasse‘s post about the mechanic was a great read.

XI) Save our planet and all the innocent creatures on it! I know it seems hopeless at this point, but we have to try. Check out Cupcakes and Machetes‘ post for some links to good conservation places you can support.

XII) Knowing when to restart… Do you want to erase all your progress to actually remember what’s going on in a game you’ve put down for a while? Tough call. Luckily, Virtual Bastion has a fantastic article about that.

XIII) Athena recently asked a brilliant question on AmbiGaming: Can you miss a video game? Absolutely! And I definitely need to play the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy again soon… the feelz are always for realz.

Gaming Things

Games Completed So Far in 2019: 4

Games Newly Finished

Nothing….

Games I’ve Actively Played

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 - Dogmeat
After putting the game down for over two years, I decided to resume my playthrough (as per my #MaybeInMarch plan). The controls came back to me surprisingly easily, and the quest details on the Pip Boy helped jog my memory. The biggest problem is remembering where (or even who) in the Commonwealth all of my companions are. Thankfully, I was able to lure Dogmeat back to Sanctuary with a doghouse trick. I miss having a dog IRL.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger - Thunder
Started this masterpiece a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the game just doesn’t hold my interest for long play sessions. I guess there’s a lot going on in my life and old school JRPGs require a certain amount of patience I don’t have at the moment. Don’t get me wrong (seriously… put down the weapons). I’m enjoying it in small bursts so far. Last time I played, I unlocked the magic techs from Spekkio. Chrono now knows a tech called Lightning… AWESOME!!! ⚡⚡⚡

Games On the In-Progress Back Burner

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt – I’m planning to wrap this up after Chrono Trigger and Fallout 4 are off my gaming plate. I only have the last part of the Blood and Wine DLC left to finish.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild – I HATE THE DURABILITY MECHANICS. Ahem. Sorry, I needed to say that… again. I’ll resume this after the Witcher is done. I’ll probably bring the game when I visit my folks for Easter Weekend in April.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty – Haven’t had a chance to dive back into the VR Mission hell required for my Platinum trophy quest.

Dark Souls – Not in the mood to resume dying a ton… yet.

Collecting Things

New Swag

Ice Climbers Amiibo

Ice Climbers Amiibo

Probably one of the absolute cutest Amiibo so far! I preordered this adorable pair along with King K. Rool and Piranha Plant Amiibo from Amazon Japan. For some reason, only Ice Climbers came and the other two are estimated to ship out in July with the next batch (Daisy, Isabelle, Ken, Young Link, and Pichu). Gosh, I hope I didn’t miss the boat on them… they are sold out everywhere now.

Preordered Swag

Snake, Simon, Ivysaur, Pokemon Trainer, Squirtle Amiibo

Despite my two MIA Amiibo from the just released Smash Bros. wave, I still trust Amazon Japan to fulfill my Amiibo needs. I’ve preordered all of the recently announced figures from them. Super excited for the Snake one!!

Things Newly Read

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

Simply fantastic! You can check out my review for more info on why I freaking love this book.

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Summer Bird Blue

Another fantastic read! I’m sorting out my thoughts for a review of it soon-ish. In the meantime and to quote my overly excited Twitter tweet about it: “An incredible tale showing the healing power of music, the eternal bond between sisters, the never ending battle with painful emotions, and a perfect representation of how I experience asexuality…. Damn!”

Now Reading

Rejected Princesses: Tales of History’s Boldest Heroines, Hellions, and Heretics by Jason Porath

Rejected Princesses

I’m all for gender equality! No one is superior to anyone. Women are capable of being brave sheroes and despicable monsters. Toxic Humanity is the biggest issue in today’s world, but I digress. I’m really enjoying this book covering a ton of really neat female historical figures I’ve never heard of before. The author’s sarcastic style is brilliant! Most amusing one I’ve read so far: Julie ‘La Maupin’ d’Aubigny – “The Sword-Slinger Who Burned Down a Convent to Bang a Nun” Just. Wow…

Hot Shots! Part Deux

Hot Shots! Part Deux
Charlie Sheen was pretty buff in this Rambo parody. Must be before the drugs…

The Man Who Would Be King

The Man Who Would Be King
Long story with how I saw this one…. TL;DR – I was at an actual Freemason club’s open movie night. Neat! But yeah, even for an old movie I really enjoyed it. Sean Connery is just so freaking smooth and fun to watch. And now the voice in my head will be imitating his voice for the rest of this post… sigh.

Life & Other Things

Still plugging away with real life stuff. Going to work, walking, lifting weights, trying to deal with my social problems, important secret side projects…. all good. It felt really good to vent and exercise the creative part of my brain in the Inkling post I wrote.

I also donated blood for the first time. My dad has been doing it for years so I finally decided to go for it too. Of course, he was quick to lightheartedly tease me about him having done 72 donations, while I just did one so far. I’ll get there, dad… jeez. But yeah, it didn’t hurt much at all and the benefits are amazing: +100 feeling better about myself, social time with nice strangers, free snacks, instantly burnt ~650 calories, decreased risk of cancer, decreased risk of heart disease, and 3 lives potentially saved. I’d call that a win-win.

Donate Blood
[LightningEllen receives badly needed mental health boost]
Unfortunately, there are a lot of roadblocks than can prevent you from becoming a donor. Even some rather discriminatory ones that I won’t go into a rant about here. If you can, you definitely should!

Oh and my mom recently turned 73 years old. She’s still as cranky and amazing as ever, even if she is dealing with some annoying mobility issues now. My parents are both getting up there. I wish they’d ditch their middle of nowhere home to move closer to me so I can help them out with stuff more. None of us are here forever, eh. Enjoy each moment you get to spend with those special humans you care about.

There you have it! My monthly progress post thingy. What’s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

⚡Thanks for reading!⚡

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

I'm a wannabe writer and an avid video gamer with a slight (okay, maybe extreme) Amiibo addiction. I'm from the coastal province of Nova Scotia in Canada, eh. When I'm not gaming, I have a steady job thing I have to go to. It pays for the gaming thing though. :)

  1. Hello LightningEllen,
It’s my first time commenting here but I’ve read your things for a few months already.
I thought I’d ask a fellow Canadian and amiibo collector if you know anything about the upcoming Loot Goblin amiibo from Diablo 3? It’s apparently a Gamestop exclusive in the US of A but EBGames is really slow to add future releases and I fear I might miss that one.
    Cheers!
P.S.: I don’t have every amiibo but a pretty sizable collection of 77 so far, plus the Shovel Knight triple pack pre-ordered.
My collection, check the amiibo tab : https://switchlist.app/collection/53346

    1. Hello there!

Thank you for reading and I appreciate the comment 🙂

As far as I know, our EB games botched the release, had very few, and released them on December 24th (a week or so after street date).

I imported mine from GameStop USA because I didn’t want to deal with that, haha. Got dinged with a custom’s fee but still cheaper than reseller prices (was about $40 CDN total). GameStop still has them in stock if you want to try that route (they ship to Canada if you don’t use PayPal for some reason): https://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-switch/accessories/diablo-iii-loot-goblin-amiibo-only-at-gamestop-ships-by-5-31/167755

Not sure if Canada will ever see a restock or not. Sigh…

And that’s an awesome collection you have there! Happy collecting and good luck.

      1. I checked the price on a bunch of sites this morning (eBay, Kijiji, Amazon (Canada, USA, UK, Japana, Italy, Germany, France), PlayAsia) and they all cost too much for me right now. Many sites in Europe list a possible restock in May so I might retry then. 😐

I don’t want to buy from Gamestop US. I had bad experiences with them. My last purchase was Bravely Default Special Edition; I missed the Canadian preorder. With exorbitant shipping prices and bad custom practices from UPS, the item finally cost me around 115$ CAD. Not a good deal. At least I enjoyed the game!

  2. Chrono Trigger is one of those games that’s often considered one of the absolute greatest games of all time. Though I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s the best JRPG out there, it was probably the medium’s first true masterpiece (if not, *the* first one), and it deserves its strong following.

  3. Thanks a bunch of the for the link love!

Also, Hot Shots, Part Deux! Man, I haven’t thought of that movie since college. Pure comedy gold, if you ask me…a person with pretty low comedy standards. 😉

  4. Good luck with the amiibo hunt. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get the Ultimate ones. I was barely able to get the Smash Wii U ones. I am a sucker for all of the Splatoon stuff though. Still need the Splatoon 2 Inklings, and Squid. I thankfully found a lone Octoling three pack last month.

  5. Yay, it is my favorite time of the month! I love reading these updates. I have had the winter blues a bit lately here in Chicago so I feel you there. Thank you again for the shout out! I really can’t tell you how much I appreciate each one. I know the exact Mew card you’re talking about and I still have mine! I went to see the Pokemon movie in large part to get the card. It is a beautiful and weird card all at once. You can’t read anything on it! XD Thanks for bringing back some memories for me as well 🙂

      1. Yay! You still have an open offer to write about them on my site (and can of course cross-post to yours too). At the same time though, if you just wanted to write them on your site, I would be very excited to read it!

  6. Hey, I’m glad you enjoyed that post! I’m also glad there was somebody who enjoyed that post, didn’t think that was going to happen.

And yeah, if you need a break, take a break. This is supposed to be fun. If it’s not fulfilling to you, it’s not worth doing. This will still be here when you’re ready to come back

    1. Absolutely! I’ve always had an interest in business even if I never pursued it. I wanna be a CEO someday, haha.

For sure. My moods are all over the place lately, but it’s important to remember this is all for fun and shouldn’t feel like a chore.

  7. Thanks for the shoutout 😀 I love your new sidebar too.
I hate daylight savings time, our clocks don’t change until the end of March and I’m dreading it!
I regret selling my old Pokemon cards, I’d love to still have them. There’s always Yu-Gi-Oh I guess, I still have those 🙂
Rejected Princesses is awesome! I’ve been stalking their Facebook page for a while and love their posts 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you like my fancy new sidebar, haha.

Ugh. Sorry you have to deal with DST too. I regret selling my old Yu-Gi-Oh cards and still have my Pokemon ones… so kinda the opposite of you.

I’ll have to check out the Rejected Princesses’ Facebook page sometime.

  8. Hello, friend! Thank you so much for the warm welcome back. ❤ I love chatting with you from time to time on Twitter. I'm sorry it took me so long to check up on this. My replies are a lot slower lately and I apologize. I blame my lack of having enough hours in a day. I hope you are doing well.

I've played very little of Fallout 4 but I watch my partner play because he created a character off of me and apparently she collects all the coffee mugs in game like the rl me. Haha! Seriously they need to have more than just plain old white coffee mugs in the game. Maybe there's a mod or it should be a mod!

  9. DST is the WORST. I thought there were enough people in charge to kill this thing already. I think I took off the Monday after because I made the mistake of not doing so for fall and I paid for it. You’d think an extra hour would be better, but noooo.

Yay two shout outs in a day for TSN 😀

      1. I don’t get it either. There is zero reason to do it, and I’m starting to suspect there was never really a good reason. No one seems to want to take the blame for it, and no one seems to want to change it. The only state I know that doesn’t observe it is Arizona.
