Things on the XIIIth: February 2019

Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite number… because I like Final Fantasy XIII a lot? Jeez… tough crowd.

Tis the month of love… or at least that’s what the Hallmark Corporation wants it to be. I won’t go off into a rant in this progress post, but damn, I’m not really a fan Valentine’s Day. It’s mostly the annoying subliminal (super-liminal?) messages that businesses use to push subpar chocolate, overpriced jewelry, and wilted flowers. Yeah. I’m probably jealous on some level… oh well!

Alrighty. I’ve sated my need to whine a bit, so on with the things I’ve been up to this month! Is it St. Patrick’s Day yet? This will also be shorter than usual. Long work day with tons of things going on so I’m not feeling as babbly as usual. Here we go, though!

Blogging Things

My daily posting streak went crashing down along with my mood (not surprised… I know me pretty well these days). I’m happy to report I finished re-posting my Dragon Age Origins babblethrough series before I got all cranky, though! I’m also pleased with the book reviews I managed to get posted. I’ve been wanting to get into doing those more and they were fun to write.

The awesome Kim from Later Levels and I teamed up to host a special community event this week: #LoveYourBacklog! Check out Kim’s post to find out how you can partake. And lemme know if you do since I’d love to read your post! The backlog beast can totally become something for us to be proud of rather than the invincible foe we usually treat it as.

Things I Wrote Here

XIII Random Great Things I Read From Others

Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!

I) Ellie over at Blogging For Dopamine wrote a wonderful post about the INTJ’s struggle with logic and emotion. As a INFJ, I related a lot. My brain and heart are often pulling me in two different directions. I can use my logic to basically cut out my feelz, but those feelz always come back with a vengeance. The key to happiness is finding that sweet state of inner peace.

II) I need moar time for participating in community events… Red Metal’s Questions for the Reader’s series over at Extra Life Reviews is always an interesting read, at least.

III) Imagining all the cool custom video game swag I could create with a 3D printer makes me all warm and fuzzy inside! I enjoyed this Killer Robotics post about getting started with the technology.

IV) If you collect cards, you’re gonna want to store them properly for the sake of your collection. Check out this post on Daily Trading Cards for the importance of the old school binder technology.

V) I found Hundstrasse‘s questioning of a missing window in the non-REmastered Resident Evil 2 game quite fascinating.

VI) Gah! Anxiety and depression like to gang up on me a lot these days. A Geeky Gal‘s recent post about anxiety struck a chord with me. It’s always nice not to feel alone when dealing with this mental health stuff.

VII) The Shameful Narcissist rocks at writing entertaining book reviews, and her All’s Well That End’s Well review is no exception, complete with amusing memes and badass commentary.

VIII) I was a tad sad to see that Normal Happenings discontinued their weekly Nice Job Badges. I always found cool bloggers through those posts and was grateful to receive a couple badges for posts here on Livid Lightning.

IX) I think I’m officially out on BioWare’s upcoming Anthem game based on the first impressions post over at Falcon Game Reviews. I was not a fan of Destiny and I only enjoy truly single player experiences.

X) Is your whiny voice evolving and trying to kill you, along with the entire human race? If you’re alarmed by this notion, definitely check out Professional Moron‘s surreal short story.

XI) SidrElf has finally explained why I love dragons so much. I may have fallen victim to marketing tricks…

XII) I seriously need to get back into the Kirby series. Defy the Majority keeps reminding me how adorably badass the pink little guy is.

XIII) I’m still plugging away at the Witcher 3 (see below) and I really enjoyed reading the Goddess of Wisdom’s thoughts on the game over at AmbiGaming. She pointed out a lot of good critiques about Geralt’s 3rd adventure. #CiriForNextWitcherGameProtagonist

Life & Other Things

I’ve been a mess, but I finally got those medical test results I’ve been anxiously (panicking?) about since what feels like forever. Good news! Nothing scary was flagged at the moment… but I still have an unexplained vision issue and another MRI in a year to check on things. Yay.

There you have it! My monthly progress post thingy. What’s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

⚡Thanks for reading!⚡

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

I'm a wannabe writer and an avid video gamer with a slight (okay, maybe extreme) Amiibo addiction. I'm from the coastal province of Nova Scotia in Canada, eh. When I'm not gaming, I have a steady job thing I have to go to. It pays for the gaming thing though. :)

  1. I think a lot of people will skip out on Anthem with the backlash over EA’s practices over the last few years. The Star Wars lootboxes, the Fifa lootboxes, locking progression behind said lootboxes/microtransactions. There’s fair chance that stuff will be in Anthem, and if that’s the case, even competitive game fans may shy away. This stuff breaks the game by making people pay their way to victory rather than legitimately getting ahead on talent, and practice.

  2. It’s just been bitter cold these days so staying inside takes priority. Work forces me to leave and it makes me sad. I’m tired of being cold. Currently doing a buddy reread of Harry Potter (first book) with my BFF.
Valentines is definitely a corporate holiday!

  3. I tried doing the whole “Post at least one article a day” thing, but I wasn’t able to stick to it after just a week. Ah well, posting whenever’s always fun too. Your Link definitely looks really snazzy in BoTW. I basically just stuck to generic duds for most of the game except for the temperature zones where I needed some armors. I’m still waiting for a sequel or something to be announced

    1. My posting mood swings quite wildly, haha. Now I don’t feel like writing at all. Not only does Link look snazzy, he’s also well protected from fire damage 😀 I hope the next Zelda game clicks with me more. BoTW has been a challenge for me to get into.

      1. I definitely had the same issue with BoTW although for me it was mainly the story. I still feel like I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it came out back when I was a kid and could spend more time just exploring and having a blast. Instead I used Wind Waker for all of that so this one just wasn’t quite as exciting. I do think the next big LoZ should be a lot better. (Hopefully it doesn’t take another 5+ years to make though)

  4. I always look forward to when you do one of these posts! They’re always fun to read and it was a really nice surprise to see a shout-out for my site. I know I’ve said it before but I don’t get a ton of hits on my site so knowing that people enjoy anything I post means a lot! I hope you’re still enjoying the Witcher 3 as well 🙂 I finally beat the last DLC (it is longer than Blood and Wine if you do very many of the side quests) and I found it to be more difficult and a little less satisfying than I had hoped but there are plenty of cool parts as well. I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your thoughts on it as well 🙂

  5. I agree, Valentines sucks!
Glad the test results flagged nothing scary. I remember being terrified when I had MRI’s for tinnitus and they found an unknown lump in my brain. Turns out it was just an arachnoid cyst, and so long as it’s not growing it’s fine to sit there. Coulda done without the anxiety and stress waiting for them to tell me that though!
I’m reading Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, about an Aro/Ace Heroine who just wants to be a doctor in a man’s world. It’s fun easy reading 🙂

    1. Boo to Valentine’s Day, indeed, haha.

Yikes!! That sounds really scary. I’m glad it’s just a cyst… wow. I can’t imagine.

OMG… Ace Heroine??? SOLD! I’m reading it now and I’ve already related to Felicity so much. Thank you 🙂

  6. Thanks for the sweet shout-out!! I appreciate it!! 🙂 I’m always happy to share my love for Kirby, haha! Oh, I’m so glad to hear you got your test results back… and glad it’s good news! Hopefully the issue with your vision gets resolved soon! ❤
