Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite number… because I like Final Fantasy XIII a lot? Jeez… tough crowd.
Hello, 2019. You have no idea how happy I am to see 2018 go away… I’ve sadly read that A LOT of people in this community had a crappy 2018. Here’s to hoping this year is a lot better for everyone!
Oh and this update post is going to be kinda half last year, half this year due to my weird fiscal month schedule thingy. You’ll see what I mean. Let’s do this!
Looking back, I’ve been on quite the unplanned posting streak. I’ve managed to post one article a day since December 15th. Wow… To be fair, a lot of those posts were from the backup of my old website. I can also thank Later Levels and AmbiGaming for hosting cool Christmas related collaborations that gave me 24 posts worth of content to ramble about. Woot!
Um, not sure how long my posting streak will continue for. I want to get my old content re-posted ASAP. Once that’s done, I’ll settle back into a less frequent babbling schedule. Or if I get in another bad mood, I’ll likely take a break for a bit. As I said in the intro, 2019 is so far so good. I have no real goals for myself since this is an unpaid hobby I partake in for the fun of it, eh.

I’m honored that Athena Veta, the wonderful WordPress Goddess of Wisdom, trusted me to watch over AmbiGaming during her well-deserved holiday break. I’ll call it a successful blog-sitting gig since nothing burnt down… or exploded… surprisingly! Here are the six posts I wrote for the gig if you’re interested in checking them out.
- Lightning-cognition: Made Up Minigames – Sometimes the most fun to be had in video games is the fun we make up on our own!
- My Most Memorable Winter Wonderlands – Just taking a merry ol’ stroll through a top 13 list of my favorite frigid related virtual memories!
- Lightning-cognition: Most Wanted Game Swag – ‘Twas the season for being greedy and thinking about wanting things, right? Tee hee! I’m kidding.
- Lightning-cognition: Good GOTY! – In my young gamer days, I was all about the GOTY, man. Nowadays, I’m filled with cold indifference.
- On What Little I Know, I Wanna Play! – 2019 is the year. Gonna stop drowning in backlogs and just play these 4 games that look really fun: God of War, Spider-man, Final Fantasy VI, and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
- Lightning-cognition: Effective Weather Effects – Boom! Shocking babblings about lightning effects in video games.
XIII Random Great Things I Read From Others
Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!
I) Ah, the lean process takes me back to my old circuit board manufacturing job. Kim of Later Levels has expertly applied the process to the backlog concept that us gamers struggle with, a lot. Genius!
II) I love seeing posts about drawings people make. This cute winter doodle from Jedi by Knight was awesome.
III) ‘Tis almost the season for that “Cashing in on Love” Day (aka Valentine’s Day). This post by Kevin over on The Mental Attic about the sad state of romances in video games was a fantastic read. In my experiences, graphic sex scenes are often treated as a “reward” for the people who like that sort of thing (and seriously, power to you if you do enjoy that). Personally, I want to see more emotional bonding and less mindless sexy time action, please. At least let this ace always be able skip the sex scenes without penalty. There are some things I can never unsee from Mass Effect and the Witcher 3… *shudders*
IV) Introducing the Shrink Sink by Professional Moron Inc.! It’s a water dispenser, drain, and drop-out level psychiatrist all in one. Imagine getting subpar mental health help while you wash the dishes or get a glass of water. If 2019 is going to be anything like 2018, I’ll take 10 please.
V) Matt Doyle Media did a really cool post about dark secrets in family friendly retro games. A creepy-fun read!
VI) If you need to see some cheerful cuteness, check out Defy the Majority’s haul of freaking adorable Kirby merchandise. I love that pink puffball!
VII) Chapter 13 of the Shameful Narcissist’s Final Fantasy VII inspired Broken Rose fanfiction is out and awesome! It was nice to see the cozy moments between Aeris and the Great General. I’m pumped for the righteous vengeance to happen. I know it has to…
VIII) You wanna see a really cool 2018 review post format? Definitely read this Adventure Rules hosted video game award show.
IX) Beal, the great creator of cool stuff, recently hit 100 followers on his blog. Congrats!! He’ll be at 200 before long, I’m sure.
X) There was this random PS2 game I remember renting, liking, and beating back in the day. It had survival mechanics like thirst and stuff. I also remember a big tidal wave happening. I often thought of this game, but for the life of me couldn’t remember what it was called. Thanks to 3PStart’s awesome review, I now know that game was called Disaster Report.
XI) Awesome to hear from the amazing blogger known as Aether again! I was legit concerned that I hadn’t heard from him in a while… Online blogger buddies are just as important to me as offline friends. Woot!
XII) Some levels are just a pain to deal with. I enjoyed reading about some frustratingly fun levels on I Played the Game.
XIII) I’ve been meaning to work on my response to I Played the Game‘s cool post idea about the first game you played on each platform. AmbiGaming reminded me of this with Athena’s entertaining trip down her game console memory lane!

Detroit Become Human – Platinumed, baby! I’m working on my review now. Sadly, I let most of 2018’s games slip away from my memory before reviewing them. Not letting that happen this year. I’m gonna finish this review before I’m allowing myself to play anything else.
Things I’m Playing Now
Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty
The Platinum trophy struggle continues. I’m not kidding – these VR missions are intense. I need to complete all 511 for the trophy. Right now, I’m sitting at 47% complete after 17+ hours of frustrating VR fun. It seems kinda hopeless at this point, especially since I’m still stuck on the Meryl sniper one, but it’s not so bad picking away at them slowly. This will be a good long term gaming project I won’t stress over too much.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
Still picking away at side quests before I continue on with the story (close to finding Ciri, I think? Been a while). I finished all the horse races and turned Geralt into a fist-fighting champion (no lie, I had to fight a bear with my bare hands). What I love about the Witcher 3’s open world is that it feels alive to me. It’s so much fun exploring with Geralt. I love him and his sarcasm! I will focus down this game once I’m done with my Detroit Become Human review.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Having played Dark Souls at last (see below), I can say Nintendo seems to have borrowed some elements from that crushing series. I’ve also learned finding stable areas is important! One had fire resistance potions that I needed to go after my second Divine Beast. I’m going to start doing the daily Amiibo scan thing to stock up on cool items (feels like cheating, but meh! My Amiibo addiction pays off at last), and then focus on this game once I’m done with the Witcher 3.
I really wanted to play this co-op with a friend. I don’t like paying for online services so we decided to check out the PS3 version. Unfortunately, I hate how co-op is handled in this game… You have to get an item to summon someone to your game. I didn’t get far enough to find that. Sigh. I can safely assume my friend is done with the game, but I want to at least pwn the Taurus boss before throwing in the towel. This isn’t exactly the fun challenge I was hoping for. Besides, MGS2 is taking up my PS3’s disk drive at the moment and I hate having more than one game on the go per system. We’ll see how it goes!
Big Gaming Plans (subject to change at any time based on moodiness level)
Clearing out my main in-progress games from last year is my top priority. After the Witcher 3 and BoTW are done, I’m going to start God of War and/or Final Fantasy VI. Haven’t decided yet. Hm. Oh and Resident Evil 2 is going to have to fit in there somewhere.
Moar Amiibo: Splatoon Octoling 3 Pack, Smash Bros. Ridley, Smash Bros. Inkling Girl
That glorious “OMG NEW AMIIBO!!” high is long gone now, but my addiction demands I continue to maintain a 100% collection status. I was impressed with the details on the Octolings! Ridley looks pretty badass. I didn’t really need yet another version of Inkling girl, but I’m happy with my purchase.
Geralt and Ciri Dark Horse Statues
Santa didn’t contribute to my backlog this year, as per my request, but he did leave me with badass Geralt and Ciri statues! OMG. These are so cool. Of course, I broke Geralt’s sword shortly after this picture was taken… oops. Durability is apparently a mechanic in real life too… Thankfully, with the help of my mom (paints) and my dad (construction grade adhesive), Geralt is armed and dangerous again.
Diablo Loot Goblin Amiibo
Gah! I HATE store exclusives so much… especially when EB Games Canada gets one. They had, like, 1 of these per freaking store, and randomly put them on the shelves long after street date. Nope. I’m not wasting Christmas Eve or spending time with my folks by trying to hunt this down. I said screw that, and imported the lil’ guy from GameStop USA. No regrets, even though I had to pay a little more (less than scalper prices at least). I’ll call is a belated Christmas gift to myself!
Metal Gear Solid – Mint Condition PS1 Version
The dude I bought this from on eBay got a very high rating! I’ll be giving this a spin whenever my MGS2 Platinum quest concludes (in success or failure). For my sanity, I figured it was best to get a version of the original MGS without trophies….

Beyond the Empire (Indranan War #3) by K.B. Wagers
What an epic conclusion to gunrunner-princess Hail’s journey to reclaim her throne! I loved how the final showdown happened. Hail always put her empire above herself and that’s one the traits I admire most about her (plus her badass sarcasm). The close relationship she develops with her bodyguards is so special! I like how the author depicts LGBQT+ relationships as nothing out of the ordinary in this universe. My favourite couple is definitely Emmory and his husband Zin (Hail’s closest BFF BodyGuards).
There Before the Chaos (Farian War #1) by K.B. Wagers
The Farians are kinda like space elves who are very secretive of their culture and gods (it’s like if the Dalish from the Dragon Age games were a race in the Mass Effect universe). The only space humans they’ve allied with are Hail and her empire. This book focuses on a war brewing between the Farian and their arch enemy that threatens to pull the gunrunner-empress into the middle of the whole conflict. It has all the sarcasm and awesomeness I enjoyed from the author’s Indranan War trilogy. I’m taking my time with this one since the other books in the Farian War series haven’t been released yet.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
I’ll admit the Resident Evil movies are a guilty pleasure of mine. And the funny thing is, watching the movies actually got me to try the games out (which I love too). I consider the game and movie worlds separate universes so the story issues don’t bug me at all. It’s all about watching Milla Jovovich (my real life shero) mindlessly kick ass and blow stuff up! This movie delivered in that area, for sure.
Overall, this last movie was alright, I guess. Definitely my least favourite movie in the series. I can only see the same laser trap room so many times before I need to eye roll a bit… It was nice to see Alice get a conclusion to her “story” (I use the word story loosely here 🙂 )
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
A cool old friend randomly popped into my life recently. We decided to watch The Last Jedi since I was very far behind on my Star Wars, and he’s an expert on the lore. We had a blast making fun of plot holes (and WTF was with the Leia in space scene?). I watched this movie before The Force Awakens, so that gave me a neat perspective. It was good overall, despite some pacing issues.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Loved this movie much more than The Last Jedi! One of my BFFs was nice enough to invite me along to watch this with her and her other half on New Years Eve, which was awesome! I’m old and ended up passing out before the movie was over, but finished it up the next day. I knew the big spoiler about a big death, but it didn’t ruin the overall plot for me. Finn and Rey are pretty badass. I’m pumped for the next movie!
I watched this when another BFF visited me recently (look at me being all social this year). This was a very, um, neat movie about a police robot who gains unshackled AI, and then he becomes a gangsta when he starts hanging out with people from Die Antwoord. Got A LOT of Grand Theft Auto vibes during the movie. It was so perfect that I had beat Detroit Become Human that weekend, too.
Apparently, Die Antwoord is a popular South African rap group made up of Yolandi, Ninja, and some weird DJ guy makes appearances. I had never heard of them before. My friend told me about them while we were watching this movie. I did check out some of the music. It’s a lot of the hyper-sexualized themes I dislike greatly in popular music, but the beats were cool. Yolandi’s voice is awesome to my ears. I especially enjoy listening to her rap/sing in Afrikaans and Xhosa (I Google translated, and nope, most of the lyrics aren’t, um, nice 😛 ). I’m listening to their song Darkling right now and really like it!
“Toemaar, toemaar baba, moenie huil nie
Mamma moet nou weggaan, maar moenie worry nie
Al is jy arm, of al is jy ryk
Die Here sal vir ewig en altyd na jou kyk”

Final Space (Season 1)
My friend got me hooked on this show when I visited her during a rough time. It gave me a lot of Futurama vibes and has tons of dark humour (my favourite kind). I can’t remember the last time a cartoon made me laugh and cry so much. Highly recommended! Mooncake is so adorably badass.
Life & Other Things
I’ve been 30 for 20 days, I still don’t have my medical test results from November (spinal tap results take 6-8 weeks here… yay for “free” Canadian health care), frequently feel detached from this world, and desperately want a time machine to fix several horrible past mistakes… that’s how it goes, though! I’m learning to focus on the good things, not the bad things. I’ve got more cool friends in my life now, and I love babbling on the internet about video games. Life’s good!
And finally, a moment of silence for the awesome Oreo birthday cake I ate last year. Definitely the highlight of my 2018 😍
