Hey! Listen. You know that popular Christmas song called the 12 Days of Christmas? Athena over at AmbiGaming came up with a cool holiday themed community collaboration idea to gamify that kinda-as-annoying-as-Navi song (that we all love or hate). Basically, it’s a countdown list each day that ends up with 364 items, times however many bloggers do this, at the end of the event (something like that… my maths is bad). Be warned that my singing voice is terrible, but here we go, eh!
🎶 On the 5th day of Blogmas, the gamers said to me: Eight characters you love! 🎶
1) “Lightning” Farron
Occupation: One Woman Army, Goddess-Chosen Knight, and Savior of Souls
Voice Actor: Ali Hillis (also known as Liara T’soni in Mass Effect, Scout Harding in Dragon Age Inquisition, and Lady Palutena in Kid Icarus Uprising)
A Cool Quote: “It’s not a question of can or can’t. There are some things in life you just do.”
SURPRISE! Yes. I’m sure everyone is shocked Lightning made it on a list of characters I love… As evidenced by my blog theme, username, profile pictures, Twitter handle, constant mentioning of my undying love for the entire Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy, fancy arm tattoo, and defensive ramblings whenever I see anything negative said about her, Lightning is VERY VERY special to me. Logically, it’s hard for me to describe just how important this character is to me. You can check out my entry into the Well-Red Mage’s Final Fantasy Crystal Compendium project, and my debut article about Imaginary Idols on AmbiGaming, for more details about why I have such a huge shero crush on her.
2) Ezio Auditore Da Firenze
Occupation: Vengeful Playboy, Roma Rebellion Builder, and Wise Master Assassin
Voice Actor: Roger Craig Smith (also known as Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 5, various Cocoon inhabitants in Final Fantasy XIII, and Zhang Liao in Dynasty Warriors 6)
A Cool Quote: “To say that nothing is true is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions and that we must live with our consequences, whether glorious or tragic.”
The coolest characters come in trilogies! Not gonna lie, I hated Ezio at the start of Assassin’s Creed II. He seemed like just your run-of-the-mill playboy trying to get as much sexy time action as possible (ugh). However, I was pleased to discover how wrong my first impressions of him were! As his story unfolded over that game, Brotherhood, and Revelations, he overcame the loss of everything he held dear, evolving into an amazing human being who would do anything to protect the world around him. I also love his smooth Italian accent and generally badass nature. This dude freaking rocks!
Occupation: Stalwart Seeker
Voice Actor: Ashly Burch (also known as Cassie Cage in Mortal Combat X, Quacho Queen in World of Final Fantasy, and Chloe Price in Life Is Strange)
A Cool Quote: “Good thing I’m shunned or I’d have to talk to these idiots.”
I fell in love with Aloy within moments of playing Horizon Zero Dawn. It was really cool how the game started off by showing young Aloy grow into the badass warrior woman she is. Sadly, I related a lot to Aloy’s chronic outcast condition. I was bullied relentlessly as a kid for being different. It was hard not to cry while watching poor Aloy endure the same crap from garbage humans. I admire how Aloy pushes aside all that anger, and she is still willing to do anything to help those very people who hate her. She is a good person with badass combat skillz (oh and she’s the queen of sarcasm). Yep. I was “Aloy” Ellen for a bit on social media when the game fist came out… Aloy is just that awesome!
Occupation: Pretty Princess Plunderer
Voice Actor: Kenny James
A Cool Quote: “Shut up! And don’t mess with my minions! Only I do that!”
My greatest villain of all-time award most definitely goes to this tenacious big Koopa. Whether it’s Mario Kart or Mario Golf, I always choose to play as Bowser when I can because I think he looks awesome. He’s got an imposing stature, a badass spiky shell, and he can breathe fire like a menacing dragon. Dragons are my favourite mythical creatures, and I am also proud to say I was born in a Year of the Dragon.
Sure, Bowser is also incompetent and keeps getting destroyed by a jumpy plumber. But hey, he always picks himself off the ground and goes right back after that princess. I admire his strength and determination to achieve his life goals (morality aside). He’s also an amazing dad to adorable little Bowser Jr. Now I’m not blaming the kidnapping victim here, but I highly suggest Peachy invest in some better guards for her posh castle. The little mushroom heads clearly aren’t meeting security standards if this guy, of all Koopas, keeps breaking in.
5) Ada Wong
Occupation: Disgruntled Umbrella Corp. Employee
Voice Actor: Various ladies over many Resident Evil games
A Cool Quote: “I know I’m not capable of caring about anyone, but… I don’t want to lose you.”
I’ve only played two of the games that Ada Wong is featured in (Resident Evil 4, then Resident Evil 2), but I instantly developed a shero crush on the lady in red the first time I saw her in a game – her grand entrance in RE4. She’s such a badass! She might seem unfeeling, but I can tell she cares deeply for Leon.
Officially, she seems to be working for Wesker while secretly helping out the good guys. I could never understand her true motivations (maybe playing the other games with her might help with that). She’s such a neat gray area character! Oh and she was my very first video game shero, long before I played Final Fantasy XIII. Teenage blogger me had fun hiding behind her likeness (kinda like how I hide behind Lightning’s likeness these days).
Occupation: Reincarnated Hero of Time
Voice Actor: Various people have done his sound bytes over the years. I’m going to pretend a certain animated series and CDi games never happened…
A Cool Quote: “HA! HYAA! ARRRGH! YARRRRGH!”
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only gamer out there who loves hella popular Link from the Legend of Zelda series. Specifically, the Ocarina of Time version of Link has a very special place in my gamer heart (well, that is my all-time favourite video game). Link is the embodiment of courage and always a great source of inspiration if you need a reason to keep hoping that good can triumph over evil. I’ll never forget my jaw dropping the first time Adult Link woke up in the Sacred Realm. The only word I have for that look is badass!
7) Liara T’Soni
Occupation: Badass Biotic Prothean Specialist
Voice Actor: Ali Hillis (also known as various voices in Spider-man (2018), Shaper Valta in Dragon Age Inquisition Trespasser DLC, and Sofia Hendrik in Gears of War Judgement)
A Cool Quote: “It’s a taxi, Shepard! It has a fare meter!”
I love Liara with all my heart for so many complicated reasons. Her and my Shepard developed a really close friendship during my time with the Mass Effect trilogy. By declining all the “official” romance options with Liara, I stumbled upon the ideal life partnership that I want to have with someone, someday (I hope). None of that sexy kissing stuff, but lots of hugging, talking about life, and having each other’s back. Liara T’Soni is the super best friend of this demiromantic asexual’s dreams. I’ll always love her for giving me this special relationship I’ll probably never find in reality.
Occupation: Awkward Grey Warden
Voice Actor: Steve Valentine (also known as Harry Flynn in the Uncharted series, Johanssen in Tesla Effect, and Mad Scientist in Supergirl).
A Cool Quote: “That’s what I’m here for. To deliver unpleasant news and witty one liners”
Oh, my dorky knight man played a huge role in helping me figure out my sexual orientation. I can safely say he was my first true video game character crush. What confused me so much while I was playing Dragon Age Origins was that, while I knew I loved him (jealousy even happened in my crazy mind… especially during a certain Morrigan proposition), I had ZERO desire to, well, bang him or even kiss the big dork. I kept dreaming of how amazing it would be to hug him, fight by his side, and just talk about life with him, all while enjoying his awkward one liners.
Early this year, I was trying to describe to a good friend how I felt about Alistair, and that led me to do a Google search about “not being sexually attracted to any gender”. That’s when I learned what asexuality was. I’ll always love you, Alistair! But if I had to choose between you and Liara… well, the amazing asari would win. Tee hee!
Another verse of my Blogmas song complete! I could name about a billion other video characters I love, but I’m quite happy with how this list turned out.
Oh and to continue the Blogmas song:
Be sure to check out the host Goddess of Wisdom’s version of the song thus far (including links to other participants, eh).
