Things on the XIIIth: October 2018

Hello, internet! Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Hard to believe we’re almost halfway through the spooky month of October, eh? And damn, A LOT of people sure get creative with amusing Twitter names and such. Alas, I tried really hard to come up with something creatively creepy, but my brain just couldn’t think of anything cool. A huge shout-out to Lodestar Valor (or should I say @LodesOfScare_Valor) for suggesting this:

Personal health problem wise, not much has changed since last month. I’m still anxiously awaiting a diagnosis from my country’s incredibly slow-ass healthcare system (at least if you live in one of the “poor” provinces of Canada), while hoping symptom progression is all in my imagination. Next up, I have to get one of those dreaded spinal tap tests done in a few weeks… and well, that test sounds like it really sucks. At least it should tell my neurologist with 95% accuracy if I have the sorta scary thing they think I might possibly have. Only took a few weeks to get an appointment with that neurologist too, by the way.

Yeah… I’ve been pretty moody, and way more withdrawn than usual in real life, so thank you very much for being supportive and distracting, internet world. Enough babbling about my problems, eh! Life’s short and we all must conquer those obstacles we come across, no matter how impossible they may seem to overcome. On October 22nd, work is also sending me to the Western Canadian province of Alberta for a week, and as much as I’m not looking forward to flying and 10 hour travel days, it’ll be nice to get a change of real world scenery.

Anyway, here’s the gist of what I’ve been up to lately!

Blogging Things

If you’ve noticed my avatar looks different lately, that’s because it is different! The super talented artist @RinNokuno finished the commission for a custom avatar I asked her to make for me (if you need cool art created, seriously consider checking out her page). Basically, it’s a digital art image using my real life likeness with a dash of Lightning. I really love how it turned out! As much as I wish I was, I’m not actually Lightning so it’s nice to let a little more Ellen show in my online persona.

Things on the XIIIth October 2018 2
I wish real life Ellen looked this badass!

I’m still riding the “re-posting of stuff from my old website’s backup” train, and will likely continue to be for a while yet. When I have the motivation to write new things, I definitely will! Otherwise, if I just want to post something without thinking too hard, I shall shamelessly reformat something from my old blog and post it here.

I do have a very special to me collaboration post coming out on the week of Oct. 21st… very excited to see what the internet thinks of that! Also, I’ve been really slacking as an AmbiGaming writer and will hopefully post something spooky themed there later this month. Unfortunately, I can’t really force my brain to write. I can only make words happen when the mood strikes me. Sigh…

XIII Random Great Things I Read From Others

Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!

I) As Thero has proven in this post, sometimes it’s really fun judging books by their covers. Take that, sayings!

II) Always entertaining to read a well thought out ranked list on things! Red Metal wrapped up his Zelda Retrospective perfectly by making a list of worst to best Zelda games.

III) Don’t let delinquent technology stand between you and playing classic PC games. Check out Richenbaum’s expert guide if you have problems getting technology to behave itself.

IV) David Rambles posted some very interesting thoughts on how gaming has moved into the hip and trendy spotlight these days.

V) I’m under so many NDAs that I don’t like even mentioning my day job usually, but TL;DR it involves testing cell phones. I really enjoyed reading and talking to NekoJonez on his cool post about apps on his phone.

VI) Like iplayedthegame pointed out, beat ’em ups can most certainly be brilliant. And a great stress release!

VII) Thanks to the compassionate care of the Great General, things are moving along for poor Aeris in Chapter 11 of the awesome Shameful Narcissist’s Broken Rose fan fiction. Definitely take heed of the content warnings and start at Chapter 1 if you’re want to experience this powerful story.

VIII) The soundtracks in the Donkey Kong Country games are freaking fantastic masterpieces, and TWOTALL4UFOOL picked out a lot of great gems in this post.

IX) Not bragging but I Platinumed Fallout 3, meaning I spent A LOT of time with the game. Reading about Cary’s journey through the wastes on Virtual Bastion was a great trip down memory lane for me.

X) Besides Halloween, another cool thing about October is the Inktober thing where very talented artists post cool drawings each day. I was really impressed by thegamingdiaries’ video game related masterpieces for Week 1.

XI) This whole blogging thing is a seriously time consuming hobby, but so worth it thanks to all the wonderful friends I’m grateful to have met by doing it. Kim’s post about the hardest thing she finds about blogging was a really good read, and very relatable!

XII) From the creator of, Kuribo, a cool new website about trading cards now exists! Collecting cards of the Pokemon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh varieties was something I was obsessed with as a kid. I really liked this Bowser card the website mentioned! Anything about Bowser is badass. Bwahahaha!! 😈

XIII) I can seriously stop buying games I don’t need or have time for whenever I want… honest… okay. I have a serious backlog problem, and Athena’s post on the psychology behind buying games is absolutely brilliant!

Things I’m Playing Now

Metal Gear Solid 2

Things on the XIIIth October 2018 5
Poor Snake fell into the abyss quite a lot while I struggled with grip timing in VR Variety Mission 3.

Just wow… the Platinum trophy seems so far out of reach, still. I managed to get ALL the Dog Tag related trophies for the main game. I was really proud of myself for beating the Plant chapter on Hard and Extreme difficulty, by the way. Then the cruel reality of these VR Mission challenges set in. For the Virtually Impossible trophy, I need to beat all 511 VR missions across multiple characters. So far, I managed to complete all of Raiden’s missions (including Ninja Raiden’s sword swinging ones and X Raiden’s hilariously hard Streaking Mode mission), and several of Snake’s missions. I’m sitting at 41.6% total mission completion… in 15 hours. Yikes!

Things on the XIIIth October 2018 7
And then Variety Mission 4 is infinitely more hard than Variety Mission 3. Gah! Why must I suck at sniping? No amount of Pentazemin can help me with that 😦

Unfortunately, the difficulty just keeps spiking as I go on. Right now I’m stuck on Snake’s Variety Mission 4. This one needs me to protect an unconscious Meryl (don’t tell me exactly who she is… I haven’t played MGS1 yet) by sniping 26 guards who are constantly moving towards her, really quickly. If just one gets to Meryl, Game Over. The missions are starting to cross the line into unfair territory, and I might just have to give up on this Platinum trophy goal if I get permanently stuck somewhere. For now, I’ll keep trying at my leisure, while shifting my gaming focus to the next game I’m going to babble about!

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (Complete Edition)

Things on the XIIIth October 2018 3
That and “Fascinating story. Any chance it’s nearing its end?” are tied for my favourite Geralt remarks, so far.

Did my backlog monster laugh at me when I impulse purchased a huge open world game that can take forever and a day to complete? Yep! And I’m directly blaming Athena, Professional Moron, Drakulus, and Falcon Game Reviews for what happened when I saw the Complete Edition of the Witcher 3 on sale at a local game store (thanks guys!). I decided to pick up the Xbox One version for two huge reasons: 1) So I wouldn’t have yet another PlayStation Platinum trophy to become obsessed with obtaining (see above game for addiction example). 2) It’s been over a year since I turned my Xbox One on and figured the big guy could use some attention.

Things on the XIIIth October 2018 4
Ignoring all the violence and depressing themes, this game is quite a beautiful place to be lost in.

I want to do an official first impressions post of the game, but in case I don’t (very likely I won’t since I’m already 15+ hours in after just getting it on Tuesday) my TL;DR opinion is: Geralt is a sarcastic badass (and I love him for it), the side questing is intense and overwhelming (even the main quests branch off quickly when people want stuff done before they’ll do stuff for Geralt), I suck at combat and die a lot (I gave up on a werewolf side quest that was kicking my ass), I’m not a fan of the card playing mini-game Gwent (which I’m totally ignoring), loving the main story a lot so far (created a lubberkin guardian spirit in a very depressing quest, and then helped a, um, scantly clad witch lady – that Geralt seems to have met in a previous game – find a magic lamp after pwning a Wild Hunt minion), and the hauntingly beautiful environments are fun to get lost in (wandering around in the swamps of Velen at the moment).

Big Gaming Plans (subject to change at any time based on moodiness level)

My main goal: I’m going to keep alternating between hammering away at unfair MGS2 VR Missions and making tiny dents in The Witcher 3’s massive world.

As I mentioned in my intro babbling, work is sending me on a long trip for a week soon. I’ll likely be taking my Switch for the journey, which means I’ll start playing Mega Man 11 and be giving Breath of the Wild another shot then. Oh and the last weekend in October I want to give the really spooky game Soma a try. Tis the season for spooky existential crisis triggering things!

Collecting Things

New Swag

I’m now the proud owner of the Mega Man 11 Amiibo bundle edition. Gotta collect all the Amiibo!! Plus this will be the first Mega Man game I’ve ever played, which I think is way overdue based on all the praise I see for this series.

Reading Things

Books Read in 2018: 4

Now Reading

On a whim, I downloaded a sample of the novel An Ember in Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. I’m liking the 25-ish pages I’ve read so far. I like how the author writes in a very simple style that conveys a lot of information with few words. And damn, the words have been quite powerful so far. Those Martial Empire assholes, especially the Masked ones, are pretty cruel… We’ll see if I want to buy it by the time the sample ends!

Watching Things

Movies Watched in 2018: 0
TV Shows Watched in 2018: 0
Let’s Plays Watched in 2018: 3

Yeah… I still haven’t watched a single movie or TV show this year. I’ll try really hard to watch something before my next update. I did finish watching Hungrygoryia’s Phantasy Star LP on YouTube! I really enjoyed watching the journey, but there’s no way I’d ever make it through all those tricky maze-like hallways myself.

There you have it! My monthly progress post thingy. What’s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

⚡Thanks for reading!⚡

I'm a wannabe writer and an avid video gamer with a slight (okay, maybe extreme) Amiibo addiction. I'm from the coastal province of Nova Scotia in Canada, eh. When I'm not gaming, I have a steady job thing I have to go to. It pays for the gaming thing though. :)

  1. I really enjoy how I always find something new to read or watch when you do these updates. You should charge for advertising, haha! 😁

  2. Thank you for the shout out! One of these days I hope to dig out my Pokemon card collection and write a little bit about it on the site 🙂 I also hope that your health issues get resolved soon!

  3. Thank you for the shout out! I hope things turn out to be better than they seem to be (badly put together sentence). Medical worries are always horrible.

I also hope you manage to get through the MGS2 VR missions though! I remember some of the ones in the previous MGS game being pretty brutal.

  4. Witcher 3 is ruddy difficult. I’ve turned to a help guide now to save a bit of time. But when of the best bits is just touring through the massive world and scaring peasants. But this is a 200+ hour one I think really… I’m making time for it.

  5. Thanks for the shout out! I’m glad you have been enjoying my drawings. I hope that you find out about your health things soon, I hope it turns out as ok as possible. Good luck with you MGS2 VR missions, I hope you can manage them all. I have never played it but it sounds very tough.

  6. Meryl! No!!!
Ahem. Excellent 13 as always, and good luck with the platinum (you can do it!). Have fun with Geralt, too! (And I’m still only a little sorry). Thanks for the shout-out; I’m glad you liked the psych behind buying games, and hope you will only use the knowledge for good 😉

  7. Jennifer and I recently picked up some new books at a local bookstore. I ended up getting the book series of Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars… I’m a Sci-Fi nut after all. Other than that, I’ve just been working mostly. Not really getting much done outside of that, but I have a couple things on the horizon that I don’t want to share right now, because despite being relatively logical, I’m still paranoid that I’m going to ruin it by speaking about it.

I have been playing Forza Horizon 4, Skyrim, and Cities: Skylines lately though. Good times!

  8. Aw, I made the list — thanks! 😍 Good luck with The Witcher 3! I would love to tackle it someday…someday when all I can do for a week straight is play a game without any distractions. Ah, sounds like a dream, it does…

And congrats on finishing Ori and the Blind Forest, too. That game beat the emotional snot out of me, and it took me awhile to recover. Still, can’t wait for Will of the Wisps!

  9. Awesome list of things to read, I definitely need to check out the ones I missed! I hope you get some resolution on your health soon and that the test isn’t too awful x
