Wannabe Writer’s note: Most images in this post were shamelessly stolen from Adventure Rules. This post is all about his site so I hope he doesn’t mind!
I’ve not been in a writing new content mood lately, not gonna lie. I’ve been riding the “re-posting of content from my old site” train a lot, which is great for me! But Chris of Overthinker Y had a cool idea to do a community collaboration in honor of the great Blogger Blitz Host – Ian of Adventure Rules. I can definitely find some words for that.
For those of you unaware, Ian runs a now annual (I think, right?) event on his website where bloggers go against each other in a writing competition, picking video game characters and writing them through freaking crazy scenarios. Oh and being judged by a jury of judgey little punks… yep, Blogger Blitz is hella scary and fun!
I’ve had the honor of partaking in both seasons of Blogger Blitz, with very different results. In a shocking twist, Lightning and I somehow managed to win Blogger Blitz 2017. I still demand a recount…
This year’s event was subtitled Black Sheep, and only villains could play. I’m a super huge fan of Bowser the great Koopa King, so I went with him (I hesitated about entering again this year due to the, um, the state of my mind… you know, recent blogger meltdown and all that). The un-luck of the draw put me up against one of my best friends… I don’t like fighting against good friends, so we collaborated instead (sorry again, judges of this year). TL;DR – I got pwned in the first round, and was not disappointed.
I’ve learned so much from great bloggers during these competitions, and I’d like to think my own creative ramblings have improved thanks to Blogger Blitz (my confidence level sure has increased, at least). After last year’s event, that was the first time I felt like part of an amazing blogging community.
With Blogger Blitz, Ian has really created something special that brings the community together. I can only imagine how much time it takes him to write up the entertaining results posts, not to mention drawing the epic things to go along with them. I definitely appreciate all the hard work involved with running this event.
Ian is also an awesome blogger outside of Blogger Blitz, and I’d like to highlight some of his other great works on Adventure Rules (Dude, if you’ve seen an influx of views from Canada last night, that was me hunting down all the cool posts I remember reading. Also sorry for all the pingback spam).
XIII Great Things on Adventure Rules
I) Business Inquiries Page – I’ll start off with some free marketing. Ahem. Any video game company in need of a review or anything should totally consider striking a business deal with Ian.
II) Goals Page – Gotta admire someone with a plan! Ian has definitely hit his goals this year, in my opinion.
III) Amazing Adventures Page – This dude runs so many awesome community events and is nice enough to dedicate a page to everyone who has ever participated. Aw!
IV) Turning Over A New Leaf; or, A Second Chance at First Impressions – Very interesting article about getting into Animal Crossing New Leaf. I haven’t played any of the Animal Crossing games so it was cool to read about Ian’s personal perspective.
V) Critiquing Criticism: How Reviews Are Changing on Adventure Rules – What is review, anyway? Many people have definitions about that, but I think the ultimate goal should be for the reviewer to have FUN reviewing stuff. Looking forward to reading Ian’s future reviews!
VI) I Don’t Have Anything to Play – Except, You Know, My Entire Backlog – The backlog struggle is real… That’s all I can say.
VII) Adventure Rules Reviews – The Restartlocke Challenge – I’m sure everyone’s heard of the those gamer created challenges in Pokemon games (I honestly hadn’t until Ian and other bloggers started embarking on Nuzlocke). It’s a very cool idea to review challenges!
VIII) And So It Ends – E3 2018 In Review – Yep. I didn’t get a chance to watch a single E3 conference this year, but luckily Adventure Rules had awesome coverage of the events for me to read!
IX) Super Mario Odyssey and the Open-Closed World – Why must every game lately be a massive world that usually ends up being empty? This is a great post that highlights the point that bigger isn’t always better.
X) A House Divided: Appealing to Different Play Styles at the Tabletop – I don’t think I’ve ever played a tabletop RPG before, but I’ve learned a lot from the articles Ian writes about them.
XI) Smash Five: 5 Concepts for a Single Player Mode – I would definitely LOVE to see an well done story mode in the new Smash Bros. game.
XII) If I Could Stream: Nintendo 64 Games – I’ll never have the confidence to attempt video game streaming. The N64 is my favourite system so I enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
XIII) High Score Haute Couture: A Judge’s Perspective – Not only does Ian run amazing community events, he also supports other bloggers with their great things.
Wait… is that Athena of AmbiGaming I see over there?? I’m going to gladly hand the spotlight over to the mighty Goddess of Wisdom for a bit!
An Addition for Ian
Whoa whoa whoa you didn’t think I was going to let LightningEllen post without popping in and collaborating with her, did you? If we can get Bowser and Marjolaine to team up, then I think it’s only fitting we do the same. Hopefully without causing as many headaches this time 😛
I’m so happy that Ian decided to host Blogger Blitz again, this time turning expectations on their heads and having the villains of the gaming world take center stage for once.
Having been a judge of the first Blogger Blitz last year, I was very excited to collaborate with Ian again, this time as a competitor. As always, Ian was so creative when coming up with the events, and with keeping the audience as involved as possible the entire way, from asking for suggestions, to live-tweeting the results for the match-ups, to even hosting Q&As on Twitter during the competition.
Ian is dedicated to keeping people involved, and that’s one of the things that makes these types of collaborations so special.
That, and Ian’s awesome artwork.
So, thank you, Ian, for designing and hosting another fantastic Blogger Blitz!
See you soon,
PS I tried to get Marjolaine to say something, but… it wasn’t very sportsmanlike. I’m sure she means to say she was honored to have been included in the event at all, though. Right? That’s what all those Orlesian words mean… right…?
Yup. Bowser was really cranky too, especially after getting ignored in the finals, but he’s moved on to his next princess-nabbing scheme now. The big guy never gives up, no matter what! Also, a huge congrats to this year’s champion Michael of Git Gud at Life. Here’s the emoji trophy I shall pass on to you – 🏆
And there you have it! In summary, Ian rocks and you should totally follow his website, if you aren’t already. Ian has always been a huge supporter of my ramblings on the internet and I appreciate that a lot! I know Adventure Rules has a bright future ahead.
⚡Thanks for reading!⚡
If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!
